Northern Ireland Wind Power Tops 50% of Electricity Demand

Wind power in Northern Ireland broke all records this year, when turbines in July met 51% of the country’s demand for electricity with the production of 280 megawatts (MW), according to information provided by the System Operator of Northern Ireland (SONI).

The wind production for the 20 minute period from 4.35am to 4.55am on the 4th of July 2010 met over 50% of the demand with wind generation at 280MW and an electrical demand of 550MW. Wind power supplied over 40% of the demand on the same day for over 3 hours, between 3.30am and 6.45am. In 2010 wind power has meet 9% of Northern Ireland’s total electricity demand. Andrew McMurray from NRG Solutions, renewable energy consultancy said, “It is fantastic news to see this new recording being set. Renewables are a win-win all around, providing clean green energy from our indigenous natural resources and providing jobs and investment into Northern Ireland instead of sending our money to Middle East to buy oil.”
